Samuel Fuller
Samuel Fuller (1912–1997) was an American director, screenwriter, and novelist whose lean, punchy genre films brought a tabloid-newspaper sensibility into American B-movie filmmaking. A former crime reporter and Second World War infantryman, he carried both backgrounds into his work, producing war films, westerns, and crime pictures full of blunt confrontations and unexpected political bite. He was rediscovered by the French New Wave critics and remained a touchstone for later filmmakers such as Jarmusch and Tarantino. His acclaimed films include The Steel Helmet, Pickup on South Street, Forty Guns, Shock Corridor, The Naked Kiss, and The Big Red One.
