Roberto Rossellini
Roberto Rossellini (1906–1977) was an Italian director and screenwriter, the central founding figure of Italian neorealism. Working with scarce resources in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, he made a series of features about the Italian Resistance, the occupation of Rome, and the moral aftermath of fascism that redefined what fiction cinema could do with non-professional actors and real locations. His later work moved into intimate psychological dramas with Ingrid Bergman and then into didactic historical television. His acclaimed films include Rome, Open City, Paisan, Germany Year Zero, Stromboli, Voyage to Italy, and The Taking of Power by Louis XIV.
