Ritwik Ghatak
Ritwik Ghatak (1925–1976) was an Indian director, screenwriter, and theatre artist, regarded alongside Satyajit Ray as one of the most important figures of postwar Bengali cinema. Displaced as a young man by the 1947 Partition of Bengal, he made the partition's psychological and social consequences a recurring subject of his features. His work fused Indian classical music, Bengali theatre, and Soviet montage in a deeply expressive, often melodramatic style. His acclaimed films include Nagarik, Ajantrik, The Runaway, Meghe Dhaka Tara, Komal Gandhar, Subarnarekha, A River Called Titas, and Reason, Debate and a Story.
