Pedro Costa
Pedro Costa (born 1959) is a Portuguese director, one of the most internationally celebrated figures of contemporary European cinema and a major influence on the so-called slow-cinema tradition. After studies in history and at the Lisbon Film and Theatre School, he turned to direction in the late 1980s and developed a distinctive low-budget style — long takes, available light, and a recurring company of non-professional actors drawn from the demolished Lisbon shanty town Fontainhas. His acclaimed films include O Sangue, Casa de Lava, Ossos, In Vanda's Room, Colossal Youth, Horse Money, and Vitalina Varela.
