Pedro Almodóvar

Pedro Almodóvar (born 1949) is a Spanish director and screenwriter, the most internationally celebrated figure of the post-Franco Spanish cinema. He emerged from Madrid's countercultural Movida in the early 1980s with low-budget, ribald comedies before refining a melodramatic style of saturated colour, female-centred ensembles, and unabashedly emotional plots. His films have explored desire, motherhood, queerness, and the long shadow of Franco-era Spain across more than twenty features. His acclaimed films include Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, All About My Mother, Talk to Her, Volver, Pain and Glory, and Parallel Mothers.
