Paul Schrader
Paul Schrader (born 1946) is an American director, screenwriter, and critic whose career has spanned the New Hollywood generation and its many descendants. Raised in a strict Dutch Calvinist family in Michigan and trained as a critic at UCLA under Pauline Kael, he wrote a celebrated study Transcendental Style in Film before turning to screenwriting — most famously for Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver and Raging Bull — and then to direction. His acclaimed films include Blue Collar, Hardcore, American Gigolo, Cat People, Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, Light Sleeper, Affliction, First Reformed, The Card Counter, and Master Gardener.
