Olivier Assayas

Olivier Assayas (born 1955) is a French director, screenwriter, and former critic at Cahiers du Cinéma, one of the most internationally recognized French filmmakers of the post-New-Wave generation. The son of the screenwriter Jacques Rémy, he worked as a critic and screenwriter through the 1980s before turning to feature direction. His work has alternated between intimate character studies and ambitious genre experiments, often centred on the porous boundaries between art, performance, and life. His acclaimed films include Cold Water, Irma Vep, Clean, Summer Hours, Carlos, Something in the Air, Clouds of Sils Maria, and Personal Shopper.
