Nicholas Ray
Nicholas Ray (1911–1979) was an American director regarded by the French New Wave critics as one of the great Hollywood auteurs. Trained as an architect under Frank Lloyd Wright before working in radio and the Federal Theatre Project, he turned to direction with the proto-noir They Live by Night and produced a body of work characterized by widescreen compositions, intense colour, and outsider protagonists. His acclaimed films include They Live by Night, In a Lonely Place, On Dangerous Ground, The Lusty Men, Johnny Guitar, Rebel Without a Cause, Bigger Than Life, Bitter Victory, and Party Girl.
