Mikhail Kalatozov

Mikhail Kalatozov (1903–1973) was a Soviet director, one of the most internationally celebrated figures of postwar Soviet cinema. His feature The Cranes Are Flying won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. His later feature I Am Cuba, a Soviet-Cuban co-production with extraordinary swooping crane shots, became a touchstone of cinematographic ambition. His acclaimed films include Salt for Svanetia, The Cranes Are Flying, Letter Never Sent, and I Am Cuba.
