Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger
Michael Powell (1905–1990) and Emeric Pressburger (1902–1988) were a British writer-director-producer team — Powell English, Pressburger Hungarian and Jewish — whose long collaboration as The Archers produced some of the most distinctive features in British cinema history. Their working method — sharing direction, writing, and production credits — gave them an unusual freedom across genre and tone. Their features fuse English literary tradition with continental European visual sophistication. Their acclaimed films include The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, A Canterbury Tale, I Know Where I'm Going!, A Matter of Life and Death, Black Narcissus, The Red Shoes, The Tales of Hoffmann, and Peeping Tom.
