Max Ophüls
Max Ophüls (1902–1957) was a German-French director, born Maximilian Oppenheimer in what is now Saarland, whose elegant, camera-moving features in German, French, Italian, English, and Dutch made him one of the great cosmopolitan figures of mid-twentieth-century cinema. After early stage and German studio work, he fled the Nazis and worked across Europe, Hollywood, and finally postwar France, where he produced the four late masterpieces on which his reputation chiefly rests. His acclaimed films include Liebelei, La Signora di Tutti, Letter from an Unknown Woman, Caught, The Reckless Moment, La Ronde, Le Plaisir, The Earrings of Madame de…, and Lola Montès.
