Maurice Pialat
Maurice Pialat (1925–2003) was a French director and screenwriter whose late and uncompromising career produced some of the most emotionally raw features in late-twentieth-century French cinema. A painter who came late to filmmaking — his debut feature L'Enfance Nue appeared when he was past forty — he developed a stripped, semi-documentary style that captured the messy reality of family quarrels, dying parents, and unstable love affairs. His acclaimed films include L'Enfance Nue, We Won't Grow Old Together, The Mouth Agape, Loulou, À Nos Amours, Police, Under the Sun of Satan (which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes), and Van Gogh.
