Luchino Visconti
Luchino Visconti (1906–1976) was an Italian director and screenwriter, an aristocrat and committed Marxist whose work bridged Italian neorealism and operatic literary spectacle. He apprenticed under Jean Renoir in late-1930s Paris before returning to Italy and directing Ossessione, often cited as a prototype of the neorealist movement. His later career moved into lavish historical and family epics built around themes of class decline, repressed desire, and the disintegration of old European orders. His acclaimed films include Ossessione, La Terra Trema, Senso, Rocco and His Brothers, The Leopard, Death in Venice, and Ludwig.
