Lois Weber, Phillips Smalley
Lois Weber (1879–1939) and Phillips Smalley (1865–1939) were an American director-screenwriter-producer team, with Weber as the dominant creative figure. Weber is widely regarded as the most important woman filmmaker of the American silent era and one of its most successful directors of either sex. Together and individually they produced features that engaged with serious social and moral themes including poverty, contraception, and capital punishment. Their joint acclaimed films include Suspense, Hypocrites, Where Are My Children?, The Blot, and Shoes.
