Li Yu
Li Yu is a Chinese film director, screenwriter, and former television host born in 1973 in Shandong, China. She is known for independent films that explore gender, sexuality, personal freedom, and social change in contemporary China. Li gained international attention with Fish and Elephant (2001), considered one of China’s first openly lesbian-themed films. Her later works, including Dam Street (2005), Lost in Beijing (2007), Buddha Mountain (2010), and Ever Since We Love (2015), earned acclaim for their emotional intensity and realistic portrayal of modern urban life. Her films often focus on marginalized characters and challenge social conventions.
