Kon Ichikawa
Kon Ichikawa (1915–2008) was a Japanese director with one of the longest and most varied careers in postwar Japanese cinema. Trained originally as a cartoonist and animator, he brought a strong graphic sensibility into a body of work that ranged across war drama, literary adaptation, social satire, and documentary. His official record of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics remains one of the great sports documentaries. His acclaimed films include The Burmese Harp, Fires on the Plain, Conflagration, An Actor's Revenge, Tokyo Olympiad, and The Makioka Sisters.
