Kira Muratova
Kira Muratova (1934–2018) was a Russian-Ukrainian director and screenwriter whose career across the late Soviet and post-Soviet decades produced one of the most singular bodies of work in modern Eastern European cinema. Born in Soviet Romania and trained at VGIK in Moscow, she settled at Odessa Film Studios in Ukraine, where she made the bulk of her features. Her work — built around overlapping dialogue, theatrical staging, and a recurring company of actors — was repeatedly banned or shelved by Soviet authorities. Her acclaimed films include Brief Encounters, The Long Farewell, Among Grey Stones, The Asthenic Syndrome, Three Stories, Chekhovian Motifs, and The Tuner.
