José Giovanni

José Giovanni (1923–2004) was a French novelist, screenwriter, and director, one of the most distinctive voices in postwar French crime cinema. A former convict whose own life experience fed his fiction, he wrote celebrated screenplays for Jacques Becker and Jean-Pierre Melville before turning to direction. His acclaimed films include Where the Hot Wind Blows, Two Men in Town, La Scoumoune, Le Ruffian, and Mon Père.
