John Woo
John Woo (born 1946) is a Hong Kong director, producer, and screenwriter who transformed the global vocabulary of action cinema beginning in the late 1980s. Trained as an assistant under the Shaw Brothers' Chang Cheh, he refined his now-iconic style — slow-motion gunfights, doves, two-handed pistols, balletic violence — across a series of features for the producer Tsui Hark's Film Workshop before moving to Hollywood and then back to Hong Kong. His acclaimed films include A Better Tomorrow, The Killer, Bullet in the Head, Hard Boiled, Broken Arrow, Face/Off, Mission: Impossible 2, Red Cliff, and The Crossing.
