John Sturges

John Sturges (1910–1992) was an American director who specialized in tightly constructed action and Western features in the classical Hollywood manner. After wartime documentary service in the Army Air Force, he settled at MGM and other major studios and produced a long run of widescreen features built around tough male ensembles, decisive moral choices, and a strong eye for landscape. His acclaimed films include Bad Day at Black Rock, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, The Old Man and the Sea, The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, Ice Station Zebra, and Joe Kidd.
