John Schlesinger
John Schlesinger (1926–2003) was a British director who moved fluidly between intimate kitchen-sink dramas at the centre of the British New Wave and lavish American productions of the late 1960s and 70s. He began as a documentarian before turning to feature filmmaking, and his work alternated between studies of working-class England, sharp character drama, and large international productions. His acclaimed films include A Kind of Loving, Billy Liar, Darling, Far from the Madding Crowd, Midnight Cowboy (which won the Academy Award for Best Picture), Sunday Bloody Sunday, and Marathon Man.
