John G. Avildsen

John G. Avildsen (1935–2017) was an American director, best known for his celebrated underdog dramas about athletes and outsiders. He won the Academy Award for Best Director for Rocky, the first feature in the long-running boxing franchise. His acclaimed films include Joe, Save the Tiger, Rocky, The Karate Kid, and Lean on Me.
