Jaromil Jireš, Věra Chytilová, Jiří Menzel, Jan Němec, and Evald Schorm were among the central figures of the Czechoslovak New Wave who collaborated on the 1965 portmanteau feature Pearls of the Deep, an adaptation of stories by Bohumil Hrabal. The film served as a manifesto of sorts for the New Wave generation.
