Jacques Rivette
Jacques Rivette (1928–2016) was a French director, screenwriter, and critic, one of the founders of the French New Wave alongside his Cahiers du Cinéma colleagues Truffaut, Godard, Chabrol, and Rohmer. He was a celebrated editor of Cahiers in the early 1960s before turning to long, improvisational features built around theatre rehearsals, conspiracies, and games. His features are admired for their patient duration, frequent four- and twelve-hour cuts, and a sustained interest in the relationship between performance and life. His acclaimed films include Paris Belongs to Us, L'Amour Fou, Out 1, Celine and Julie Go Boating, La Belle Noiseuse, and Va Savoir.
