Jacques Demy
Jacques Demy (1931–1990) was a French director and screenwriter who shaped a singular vein of French cinema by fusing French New Wave sensibility with the heritage of the Hollywood musical and a deep love of fairy tale. Trained at IDHEC and married to the filmmaker Agnès Varda, he established his world with Lola, set in the streets of Nantes, and refined it in two pastel-coloured, sung-through musicals scored by Michel Legrand. His acclaimed films include Lola, Bay of Angels, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Young Girls of Rochefort, Donkey Skin, and Une Chambre en Ville.
