István Szabó
István Szabó (born 1938) is a Hungarian director and screenwriter, one of the most internationally celebrated figures of postwar Central European cinema. A graduate of the Academy of Drama and Film in Budapest, he emerged in the 1960s with a series of personal, lyrical features about Budapest youth before settling into the international historical and biographical features that brought him his widest audience. He has worked extensively in German and English as well as in Hungarian. His acclaimed films include Father, Love Film, 25 Fireman's Street, Confidence, Mephisto (which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film), Colonel Redl, Hanussen, and Sunshine.
