István Gaál
István Gaál (1933–2007) was a Hungarian director, screenwriter, and editor regarded as one of the most distinctive figures of postwar Hungarian cinema. Trained at the Academy of Drama and Film in Budapest and afterwards at the Centro Sperimentale in Rome, he brought an unusually refined visual sense and a strong literary sensibility into his features, which often dealt with the moral and emotional dilemmas of young Hungarians caught between countryside and city, or between political and personal loyalty. His acclaimed films include Current, The Green Years, Baptism, The Falcons, Dead Landscape, and Buffer Zone.
