Ingmar Bergman
Ingmar Bergman (1918–2007) was a Swedish director, screenwriter, and theatre producer regarded as one of the defining authors of European art cinema. The son of a Lutheran pastor, he trained in the theatre before turning to film in the 1940s and went on to make more than sixty pictures over five decades. His work probes religious doubt, mortality, marital cruelty, and the limits of psychological revelation, often shot in austere close-up by his longtime cinematographer Sven Nykvist. His acclaimed films include The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Persona, Cries and Whispers, Scenes from a Marriage, and Fanny and Alexander.
