Helma Sanders-Brahms
Helma Sanders-Brahms (1940–2014) was a German director and screenwriter, one of the few women associated with the New German Cinema. She worked as a journalist and assistant to directors including Pier Paolo Pasolini before turning to her own features in the early 1970s. Her work focused with unusual seriousness on women's lives across German twentieth-century history — wartime mothers, working-class wives, postwar memory — and on the relationship between political and personal injury. Her acclaimed films include Under the Pavement Lies the Strand, Shirins Hochzeit, Germany, Pale Mother, No Mercy, No Future, Apple Trees, and Clara.
