Hal Ashby
Hal Ashby (1929–1988) was an American director and editor, one of the central figures of the New Hollywood generation. A long-time editor for Norman Jewison who won an Academy Award for In the Heat of the Night, he turned to direction with the cult comedy The Landlord and produced a remarkable run of features in the 1970s built around outsider protagonists, sharp social observation, and great character actors. His acclaimed films include The Landlord, Harold and Maude, The Last Detail, Shampoo, Bound for Glory, Coming Home, and Being There.
