György Szomjas

György Szomjas (1940–2021) was a Hungarian director and screenwriter, an idiosyncratic voice in late-socialist and post-socialist Hungarian cinema. Trained at the Academy of Drama and Film in Budapest, he developed an irreverent, documentary-tinged style across both fiction features and ethnographic shorts about Hungarian outsiders. His features moved across genres — youth film, rural drama, Budapest pulp — and often drew on his interest in traditional folk music and rural life. His acclaimed films include The Whetting, The Wind Is Whistling under Their Feet, Mr. Hannibal, Roncsfilm, and Rosszfiúk.
