Guy Maddin
Guy Maddin (born 1956) is a Canadian director, screenwriter, and writer who emerged from Winnipeg's independent film scene in the 1980s to become one of the most stylistically singular filmmakers in North America. His work imitates and reanimates the textures of silent and early sound cinema — irises, intertitles, melodramatic title cards, deteriorated image grain — to stage feverish, semi-autobiographical fantasies about family, memory, and his Manitoba upbringing. His acclaimed films include Tales from the Gimli Hospital, Careful, The Saddest Music in the World, My Winnipeg, and The Forbidden Room.
