Giuseppe De Santis

Giuseppe De Santis (1917–1997) was an Italian director and screenwriter, a key transitional figure between Italian neorealism and a more openly populist, generic Italian cinema. He worked as a critic at Cinema and as a co-screenwriter on Luchino Visconti's Ossessione before turning to direction, and he infused the post-war neorealist toolkit with elements of melodrama, song, and the American genre film. His acclaimed films include Tragic Hunt, Bitter Rice, No Peace Under the Olive Tree, Rome 11:00, A Husband for Anna, and Italians, Turn Round!
