Francesco Rosi
Francesco Rosi (1922–2015) was an Italian director and screenwriter whose politically engaged features brought a documentary rigour to the Italian dramatic feature. A former assistant to Luchino Visconti, he combined the look of neorealism with the structures of investigative journalism in features about Mafia influence, political corruption, and economic exploitation in southern Italy. His acclaimed films include La Sfida, Salvatore Giuliano, Hands over the City, The Mattei Affair (which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes), Lucky Luciano, Illustrious Corpses, Christ Stopped at Eboli, and The Truce.
