Ermanno Olmi
Ermanno Olmi (1931–2018) was an Italian director and screenwriter regarded as one of the most distinguished postwar Italian filmmakers in the humanist neorealist tradition. He worked for many years at the Edison-Volta electric company in Milan, where he made documentaries and short features about the working life he knew firsthand, before turning to fiction features that retained the same patient, observational sensibility. His work often used non-professional actors and rural settings. His acclaimed films include Il Posto, I Fidanzati, The Tree of Wooden Clogs (which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes), Long Live the Lady, The Profession of Arms, and The Cardboard Village.
