Emir Kusturica
Emir Kusturica (born 1954) is a Yugoslav and later Bosnian-Serbian director and musician, one of the most prominent filmmakers to emerge from the former Yugoslavia. He studied at FAMU in Prague before debuting with Do You Remember Dolly Bell?, and has since alternated between intimate ethnographic dramas and the carnivalesque ensemble pieces for which he is best known — boisterous, brass-band-scored films set among Roma communities and the wreckage of the Yugoslav wars. His acclaimed films include When Father Was Away on Business, Time of the Gypsies, Underground, Black Cat, White Cat, and Life Is a Miracle.
