Djibril Diop Mambéty
Djibril Diop Mambéty (1945–1998) was a Senegalese director and screenwriter, one of the most original voices in African cinema. Largely self-taught, he produced only a small number of films in his lifetime but they have been hugely influential for their formal invention, surreal humour, and engagement with the contradictions of post-colonial African urban life. He worked in his native Dakar and drew on traditional storytelling and African popular music. His acclaimed films include Contras' City, Badou Boy, Touki Bouki, Parlons Grand-mère, Hyenas, Le Franc, and The Little Girl Who Sold the Sun.
