Diao Yinan
Diao Yinan (born 1969) is a Chinese director and screenwriter whose noir-inflected features have made him one of the most internationally celebrated figures of younger-generation Chinese cinema. Trained at the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, he began as a screenwriter for other directors of the Sixth Generation before turning to direction with Uniform. His features fuse the textures of American film noir with the geography of contemporary industrial China and a sharp eye for institutional surveillance. His acclaimed films include Uniform, Night Train, Black Coal, Thin Ice (which won the Golden Bear at Berlin), and The Wild Goose Lake.
