Claude Sautet
Claude Sautet (1924–2000) was a French director and screenwriter known for finely observed dramas of middle-class friendship, work, and quiet personal crisis. He began in the 1950s as an assistant and script doctor before establishing himself with tense genre features and then settling into the intimate ensemble pieces that defined his mature career. His films, often built around long restaurant or kitchen-table conversations, captured the textures of professional life and the slow erosion or repair of close relationships. His acclaimed films include Classe Tous Risques, The Things of Life, Vincent, François, Paul and the Others, A Heart in Winter, and Nelly and Mr. Arnaud.
