Clarence Brown
Clarence Brown (1890–1987) was an American director and producer, one of the most accomplished craftsmen of classical Hollywood and a longtime preferred director of the MGM studio. He trained as an automobile engineer before turning to film and worked as a longtime assistant to the silent-era director Maurice Tourneur, an apprenticeship that shaped his careful, painterly visual sensibility. He directed several of Greta Garbo's most successful features. His acclaimed films include Flesh and the Devil, A Woman of Affairs, Anna Christie, Anna Karenina, Conquest, National Velvet, The Yearling, Intruder in the Dust, and Plymouth Adventure.
