Chen Kaige
Chen Kaige (born 1952) is a Chinese director and a founding figure of the Fifth Generation of Chinese cinema. He spent his youth as a Red Guard during the Cultural Revolution before studying at the Beijing Film Academy in the first class to graduate after the schools reopened. His earliest features helped reintroduce Chinese cinema to the international art-house circuit with their painterly compositions, mythic narratives, and engagement with Chinese cultural memory. His acclaimed films include Yellow Earth, King of the Children, Life on a String, and Farewell My Concubine, which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1993.
