Chantal Akerman
Chantal Akerman (1950–2015) was a Belgian director, screenwriter, and artist who became one of the most original and influential figures in European modernist cinema. Inspired by an encounter with the films of Jean-Luc Godard, she made her first short at eighteen and moved to New York in the 1970s, where contact with structural filmmakers shaped her use of duration and the static frame. Her work spans feature fiction, essay film, and gallery installation. Her acclaimed films include Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, News from Home, The Meetings of Anna, Toute une Nuit, and No Home Movie.
