Carlos Diegues
Carlos Diegues (born 1940) is a Brazilian director and screenwriter, one of the founding figures of Cinema Novo. He emerged in the early 1960s alongside Glauber Rocha and Nelson Pereira dos Santos and combined a politically engaged sense of Brazilian history with an unusually warm popular sensibility. His features have ranged from intimate intimate dramas of Afro-Brazilian life to ambitious historical pageants and musical comedies. His acclaimed films include Ganga Zumba, The Heirs, Bye Bye Brasil, Quilombo, Subway to the Stars, Tieta of Agreste, Orfeu, and God Is Brazilian.
