Andrei Tarkovsky
Andrei Tarkovsky (1932–1986) was a Soviet director and screenwriter regarded as one of the supreme artists in the history of cinema. Trained at VGIK in Moscow, he produced only seven feature films across two decades but each developed a distinctive contemplative style — long takes, slow zooms and tracks, an extraordinary sensitivity to landscape, water, and fire — that has been hugely influential worldwide. After conflicts with Soviet authorities he made his last two features in Italy and Sweden. His acclaimed films include Ivan's Childhood, Andrei Rublev, Solaris, Mirror, Stalker, Nostalghia, and The Sacrifice.
